Beautiful redheads. They’re the first and more lascivious half of “REDhead Friday.” It can (or should) evoke images of the “sexy redhead” institution (and trope). There are dangerous redheads in popular culture, redhead MILF types in many of our favorite training films, entire social media channels dedicated to the busty redhead, and redhead cosplay at any con you go to. But what does REDhead Friday mean?
Richard Kilgore and Jake Call started using the term “REDhead Friday” over on Breach-Bang-Clear several years ago (yeeeaaars ago). It was an admittedly salacious nod to “RED Friday” (q.v., down below). We originally said something like, “Wearing a red shirt is all well and good, but why not also admire a gorgeous redhead?”
Oh. Sorry.
Grunts: lascivious.
Anyway, REDhead Friday was, not surprisingly, a favorite feature of the Mad Duo’s fans and site regulars.
We still think it’s a good idea. And since so many people want us to bring that column back…
All that said, any chucklehead can wear a red shirt (or ogle a sexy redhead). If you really want to remember everyone deployed, however, we recommend something a little more tangible (and, let’s be honest, useful). To that end, we ask that you look at a good military (or first responder) support organization. Even if you’ve never heard of it. Even if it doesn’t have country music stars and movie actors giving away blankets in television commercials.
A couple we recommend are:
Special Operations Care Fund (SOC-F)
Some other ideas: You could also put some physical effort into things by joining Team Rubicon. They make a massive difference in people’s lives. Or, work to make the world a better place by giving out Tango Yankee chips when appropriate(it’s a great idea run by a damn fine human being). Lastly, if you’re gay for Dead Bird, as we are, you could follow @deadbird.society (he does good things behind the scenes, he just doesn’t thump his chest about it).

Sexy Redhead (s) for RED use
Wherein we enjoy the institution of the sexy redhead while keeping in mind our friends, family, and neighbors who’re busy in faraway shitholes and assorted “small wars”. There are many different sorts of REDhead, but our favorites tend to be bathykolpian or callipygian (or both).

Nord Thunderfuck
Ain’t that quite a name? @nordthunderfuck.
We debated about whether to put her in the busty redhead category, the redhead cosplay category, or the thicc redhead category. Guess it doesn’t matter. She is captivating.

REDhead MILF types
REDhead MILF, REDhead MYLF, or just hot redhead.
This is @julisa.kemps. Pretty wonderful eh? We’re actually not entirely sure she’s a redhead MILF, but we are sure she’s a damn hot redhead.
Sexy REDhead sidebar: If Christina Hendricks isn’t the absolute epitome of classy, gorgeous, REDhead MILF, then no one is.
Rachel Steel (another busty redhead) is by her own definition a redhead MILF, though her acting experience is in a rather different sort of movie than Ms. Hendricks. Her business is called Red MILF Productions — as many of you reading this no doubt already know.

Kissed by Fire
The term “kissed by fire” has become part of the modern lexicon, and in no niche manner either. Between the Game of Thrones books and the subsequent series, that apt description sees frequent use. “Lucky.”
The phrase was first used in book three of the series (A Storm of Swords), in the Jon Snow POV chapter where he is riding with Tormund along the Milkwater and first learns that giants are real, that there are many of them, and that Mag Mar Tun Do Weg is their king.
That’s also, by the way, when Tormund first told the tale of drinking giant’s milk — as well as the tale of how he’d lain with a great she-bear by mistake in a storm.
Read on.
The wildlings seemed to think Ygritte a great beauty because of her hair; red hair was rare among the free folk, and those who had it were said to be kissed by fire, which was supposed to be lucky. Lucky it might be and red it certainly was, but Ygritte’s hair was such a tangle that Jon was tempted to ask her if she only brushed it at the changing of the seasons.
At a lord’s court the girl would never have been considered anything but common, he knew. She had a round peasant face, a pug nose, and slightly crooked teeth, and her eyes were too far apart. Jon had noticed all that the first time he’d seen her, when his dirk had been at her throat.
Lately, though, he was noticing some other things. When she grinned, the crooked teeth didn’t seem to matter And maybe her eyes were too far apart, but they were a pretty blue-grey color, and lively as any eyes he knew.
Sometimes she sang in a low husky voice that stirred him. And sometimes by the cookfire when she sat hugging her knees with the flames waking echoes in her red hair, and looked at him, just smiling … well, that stirred some things as well. from A Storm of Swords (Song of Ice and Fire Book 3)
“Kissed by Fire” is the fifth episode of HBO’s Game of Thrones, season 3 (2013). It’s in that eponymous episode that we first hear the phrase “kissed by fire” spoken on the screen.
Spear Wife
The term “spear wife” was originally used in the GoT books to mean women of the Wildlings (“Free Folk”) who carried weapons and fought (much like the Norse, Saxon, etc. “shield maiden”). Ironically the spear wife we read about in the books and saw in the HBO series, Ygritte, was far more the archer than she was spear-woman. Though the fierce description was apt. Presumably an older spear wife could be accurately called a redhead MILF, but that’s not a term George RR Martin uses. At least not in the Game of Thrones series.
Far Dareis Mai
The term is very similar to the Far Dareis Mai, “Maidens of the Spear”, an all-female warrior society of the Aiel in Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. Aviendha, of that series, was a redhead. So were the Spear Maidens Bain, Enaila, Harilin, Maira, Nesair, Rhian, and Somara. Enaila was definitely of an age (and appearance, according to the text) to be a REDhead MILF.
Ygritte, Spearwife
“She’s a spearwife.” Stonesnake gestured at the long-hafted axe that lay beside her sleeping furs. “She was reaching for that when you grabbed her. Give her half a chance and she’ll bury it between your eyes.”
from A Storm of Swords (Song of Ice and Fire Book 3)
RED Friday
RED Friday is a tradition based on the acronym for Remember Everyone Deployed. You see it on base when people working at the PX/BX wear a red article of clothing, or by family members, veterans, and supporters who wear red on Friday. It’s been a Thing since at least 2006, possibly earlier than that, and seems to be at least as widely recognized in Canada as it is in the United States (RED Friday we mean, not just this focused admiration of the sexy redhead).
RED Shirt Friday
One phrase was extrapolated or distilled from the other, but we don’t know what name first. “Red Shirt Friday” is often used interchangeably with “RED Friday”, so does it matter? We like the term, and the mindset behind it, though we’d caution the over-enthusiastic and/or self-congratulatory not to get too moto about it. Also, FYSA if you’re reading this, there’s even an Amazon section and a Snopes entry on the term. In any case, we hope you like our sexy redhead option. P.S. If you’re a redhead MILF or a sexy redhead who actually celebrates REDhead Friday we’d love to hear about it (or see it).

1 Tormund Giantsbane, Tall-talker, Horn-blower, Breaker of Ice, Thunderfist, Husband to Bears, the Mead-king of Ruddy Hall, Speaker to Gods and Father of Hosts. In point of fact, many would say the actor that played him in the series (Norway’s Kristofer Hivju) is himself a sexy redhead.
